Abel Tasman, a seasoned Dutch sailor with a penchant for harsh punishment, was determined to find the vast continent in the southern hemisphere in 1642.
He acknowledged that he had discovered the extraordinary southern landmass, but it was clear that it was not the commercial paradise he had imagined, so he left the area and never came back.
After all, Tasman was correct: there existed an unknown continent, according to the BBC.
